About

The mission of the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health (NLIRH) is to ensure the fundamental human right to reproductive health care for Latinas, their families and their communities through education, policy advocacy, and community mobilization.

The History of NLIRH

NLIRH commenced operations as an independent organization in 1994. Its antecedent, the Latina Initiative, had emerged five years earlier under the auspices of Catholics for a Free Choice.

The Latina Initiative was created in direct response to the lack of Latina visibility on reproductive rights and health issues. After a successful five year track record at Catholics for Free Choice, the Latina Initiative was renamed NLIRH and opened its doors as the first independent national organization and voice for Latinas on health and reproductive rights issues.

In 2003 NLIRH re-opened its doors in New York City. To this day, NLIRH is the only national Latina health and reproductive rights organization representing an increasingly diverse and growing Latina population.

Dear friends at Nuestra Vida, Nuestra Voz -

I wanted to introduce you to OnTheIssuesMagazine.com, in case you hadn’t seen it. Each issue focuses on one theme, and the current one is “What is Terror for Women (and what we can do about it).” I thought you might be interested in reposting or commenting on one (or more) of our articles. See especially, Anti-Immigrant Fervor Translates to Terror for Women, by Melissa Nalani Ross at http://www.ontheissuesmagazine.com/2008fall/2008fall_11.php.

Let us know what you think…and I hope you’ll visit the site often.

    Best wishes,
    Mary Lou
