Yet another study has linked increases in men’s incidence of oral cancer to HPV. As Dan Savage has noted in the past, I think that as we see more and more studies linking HPV to oral and throat cancers in men the debate around HPV, cancer and the prevention methods (like the newly approved HPV vaccine) will shift. As we get more proof that it is not only an issue that disproportionately affects underinsured women, low-income women, and women of color, I expect that the HPV vaccine will quickly be approved for boys and much more readily given funding by our policy-makers.
