So very true!! It’s misinformation and lack of support that leads many teens to become parents.
When I was 16 I overheard my mom and her sister talking about my uncle’s fiancée, who going to the Dr to get on “The Pill”. When I asked what pill they were talking about my aunt just told me what it was, then my mom jumped in and said that it was only for married women; since they were getting married shortly, the fiancée was now allowed to get a prescription.
Little did my mother know that I was already sexually active; and without protection because my boyfriend made me believe that insisting on using condoms meant I wasn’t faithful! And where was the sex education in my high school??? Senior year, when literally half the class already had children!
About a year later (not surprisingly) I got pregnant, and when I told the counselor at the clinic why I hadn’t been using protection or on the Pill, she nearly laughed! She couldn’t believe what I had been told! I ended up getting an abortion, got on the Pill, and waited 12 more years until I felt ready to be a mother. But abortion also carries a stigma, and I personally know so many girls who chose to keep their babies, not because they were ready or wanted to be moms, but because they were too ashamed of what getting an abortion meant.
Sadly, this is happening everywhere, and it’s why it is extremely important that we’re taught about safe sex, consent, choices, and have someone we can trust with questions and problems.
